But not all lubes are the same, a few are actively problematic, and some combinations with toys or condoms cause real safety issues. Here’s the practical breakdown.

Why lube matters so much for anal

Unlike the vagina, the anus doesn’t produce its own lubrication. The tissue is also more delicate — friction without enough lube causes micro-tears, which are uncomfortable and raise infection risk. More lube, applied generously and reapplied during, is the single most effective thing you can do to make anal sex comfortable. Experienced performers on anal cam shows and sex toy shows treat generous lube as non-negotiable.

Water-based lube

Best for: latex condoms and silicone toys.

Water-based lubes are versatile and safe with all condom and toy materials. The downside is that they absorb and dry out faster than other types, so you’ll need to reapply more frequently during anal. Some water-based lubes also contain glycerin (which can cause irritation for some people) or other additives worth checking. Thicker, gel-style water-based formulas work better for anal than thin, runny ones — they stay in place longer.

Silicone-based lube

Best for: latex condoms, skin-to-skin, non-silicone toys.

Silicone lube lasts significantly longer than water-based — it doesn’t absorb into tissue or evaporate, so it stays slippery without constant reapplication. It’s excellent for anal for this reason. The important caveat: silicone lube degrades silicone toys — it causes them to become sticky, porous, and eventually unusable. If you’re using silicone toys, stick to water-based. Silicone lube is safe with latex and polyurethane condoms.

Oil-based lube

Avoid with latex condoms.

Oil-based lubes (including natural oils like coconut oil or petroleum jelly) feel luxurious and last a long time, but they have a critical problem: oil degrades latex, causing condoms to fail. If you’re using latex condoms, oil-based lube is not compatible. If you’re using non-latex condoms (polyurethane or polyisoprene) or no condoms, oil-based lube is fine for anal. It’s not compatible with most silicone toys either, and can be harder to clean off both skin and surfaces.

What to avoid entirely

A few things people sometimes reach for that are genuinely problematic:

Saliva. Not enough lubrication, not a safe substitute. Dries out almost immediately and introduces bacteria.

Numbing lubes or sprays. Designed to reduce sensation, which sounds appealing if you’re worried about pain — but pain is the signal that something needs to change. Removing that signal means you can sustain injury without knowing it.

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) with condoms. Degrades latex. Safe without condoms, but not ideal.

Flavoured lubes for anal. Often contain sugar (which irritates internal tissue) and other additives not suited for internal use.

Practical tips

Use more than you think you need. Start with it already applied externally and, ideally, some internally too. Reapply if anything starts to feel like friction rather than smoothness. Don’t treat lube as a one-time pre-application step — ongoing lubrication throughout is the standard.

More on the CAM4 blog.

Related reading: why anal hurts and how to fix it, solo anal play guide, how to have anal sex with a partner, and the CAM4 broadcaster training hub.

This is general education, not medical advice.

Lube isn’t a minor detail for anal — it’s most of the difference between comfortable and miserable, and in a couple of cases between safe and risky.
