The Kama Sutra, which means “Sex Science”, is the earliest surviving example of a written Hindu love-manual. It was compiled by the Indian sage Vatsyayana sometime between the second and fourth centuries A.D.

The Kama Sutra was actually based on translations of on even earlier sex manual called the Kama Shastras or “Rules of Love” that dates back to at least the seventh century B.C.

Vatsyayana’s Kama Sutra is valuable today for its psychological and physical insights into the interactions and scenarios of love. He defines detailed descriptions of many love-postures, sexual positions, and various forms of lovemaking including foreplay and masturbation.

Although it was mainly a book about sexual intercourse it did have some good advice about foreplay that applies to couples that tend to engage in mutual masturbation.

Here is a list of recommendations made by this ancient sexpert:

• There should be no planned order to embracing, kissing or any other acts of passion such as scratching with nails or fingers. In other words keep it spontaneous!
• When one of two lovers presses forcibly one or both of the thighs of the other between his or her own, it is called the ’embrace of thighs’.
• When a man places his breast between the breasts of a of Vatsyayana woman and presses her with it, it is called the ’embrace of the breasts’
• When either of the lovers touches the mouth, the eyes and the forehead of the other with his or her own, it is called the ’embrace of the forehead’
  When the yoni is pressed by the lingam for a long time, it is called ‘pressing’.
• Kissing should be done in moderation with variety mixed in and many acts should be performed simultaneously
• The following are the places for kissing: the forehead, the eyes, the cheeks, the throat, the bosom, the breasts, the lips, and the interior of the mouth. You can also kiss he joints of the thighs, the arms and the navel.
• When a girl only touches the mouth of her lover with her own, but does not herself do anything, it is called the ‘nominal kiss’.
• When a girl, setting aside her bashfulness a little, wishes to touch the lip that is pressed into her mouth, and with that object moves her lower lip, but not the upper one, it is called the ‘throbbing kiss’.
