The Adult Performer Advocacy Committee (APAC) has issued a call to action for the adult industry regarding a bill which can put a halt to free speech and privacy online. The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) went to vote on Monday, March 12th, and it would force many online platforms to completely censor the sex industry. Fortunately, SESTA did not get voted on yesterday, and there’s still a chance for all of us to #StopSESTA!
Pornstars, cam models, escorts, sex workers, or anyone involved in the adult industry can be affected. The U.S. government wants to move sex work completely offline where it can be far more dangerous for entertainers and their fans. When sex workers are pushed offline, they face an increased risk of violence, there could be a serious possibility of an STI outbreak, and the collected government revenue from taxation becomes more difficult to properly track.
If SESTA passes, your favourite social media accounts will be censored, targeted, or shut down. This is the moment for all sex workers and adults to stand up for free speech and protect their rights of adult industry workers and their fans. If you live in the United States, do your part and call your representatives in government RIGHT NOW!
All it takes is one call to each of your Senators and urge them to VOTE NO ON SESTA! APAC has also suggested using the following hashtags to help create a unified voice on social media: #LetUsSurvive, #SurvivorsAgainstSESTA, #SESTA, #StopSESTA.
