National Geographic Makes History

The January 2017 issue of National Geographic will be a historic one: it is the publication’s first issue to feature a transgender person on the cover.

On the cover is a 9-year-old named Avery Jackson who lives in Kansas City Kansas. Across the cover it says “Gender Revolution”. Never has a transgender person been on the cover so that is why this is a historic event. Her being on the cover helps bring awareness to the transgender community.

Avery is a perfect representative of the growing number of transgender children that have come out to say that they are not choosing but they feel like they were born into the wrong sex. In a quote that was attached to Avery’s picture it says, “the best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy.”

Avery’s family has been outspoken proponents of transgender rights for years. Debi, Avery’s mom, features her daughter’s story in a YouTube video and in a GLAAD video series. Her dad told the New York Times that raising a transgender child is the same as raising any child. A parent’s role does not change, he said.
