When various bathouses were raided in 1981 that motivated the gay community or organize a major demonstration.  After the demonstration public awareness was raised about queer issues.   Church Street was closed in 1984 while people danced in the streets.  In 1986 Pride Toronto’s first Pride Committee was created.  Sexual orientation was added in the Human Rights Code in 1987.  City Council proclaimed Pride Day for the first time in 1991 and 80,000 people celebrated.
